CLASSROOM INFORMATION:
Reading
Though much reading is done at school I do recommend 20 minutes of reading each night at home. At school we will use the McGraw Hill Reading Series. We are very excited as this is a new series for us. We will do whole group and individual reading throughout the day.
Guided Reading
Each student works in a Guided Reading group with 5 or 6 other students. We focus on reading strategies for each students individual needs.
Daily Five
As I work with students in the Guided Reading groups the other students are working independently using the Daily Five program. The students may choose to do Read to Self, Read to Someone, Work on Writing, Word Work, or Listen to Reading.
Writer's Workshop
We use a daily writer's workshop process involving 5 steps: 1) prewrite 2) rough draft 3) revise 4) edit 5) publish. We also practice many grammar skills using our workbook. .These skills are also called the Target skills. We use the Super Writing program for free choice. The students may choose to do author's chair, peer response, homework response, or teacher response at this point to share their writing pieces.
Spelling
Spelling tests will be given on Thursday mornings. A new word list will be sent home on Friday. We will sort the new words on Friday in class and do stations throughout the week to practice the words. The words will be taken from our McGraw Hill Reading program.
Printing
Proper formation is practiced for printing letters on a daily basis. As we continue this throughout the school year cursive work will be introduced.
Math
This is an exciting year for math as we will be using Dream Box and ESpark. We also cover many topics such as, addition, subtraction, estimation, measurement, telling time, counting money and fractions. Math will be taught whole group and in small groups as needed.
